2. Sensor exploration
Each mineral deposit has its own unique mineralogical characteristics, and useful sensor solutions therefore differ from mine to mine. RockDataWorks can identify the best potential sensor solutions for your operations through our in-depth understanding of the detection capabilities of the different sensing techniques. The result is a short-list of sensors to focus on, and a road map of how to develop these into useful scanning applications.
3. Sensor feasibility
Creating a proof-of-concept that a certain sensor type can detect ore quality parameters with sufficient accuracy. This is based on sensor measurements on a set of samples. Our feasibility investigations also provide a list of requirements and recommendations on sensor hardware to achieve optimal detection capabilities.

Sensing technologies
Different sensing technologies can be used to detect ore grade and other important properties.
laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)
X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
neutron activation analysis (PGNAA/PFTNA)
X-ray transmission (DE-XRT)
Measuring the transmission of X-rays through a material to reveal differences in density. Useful if ore minerals have a different density than other minerals in the rock.
raman spectroscopy
Using a laser to measure Raman scattering when light is reflected from a rock’s surface. The quantity of almost all minerals can be detected with this technique.
Magnetic resonance (MR)
Creating a strong magnetic field to cause resonances in the atomic nuclei of the different elements within the ore. Chemical composition is determined by measuring these resonances.
electromagnetic conductivity (EM)
Measuring disturbances in an electro-magnetic field when an ore material is passed through it. Used to detect the quantity of electrally conductive minerals.

I am a sensor application specialist with over a decade of experience in researching and developing ore sensing solutions for mining. I have worked on a variety of sensor applications including drill-core, drill chip, and conveyor belt scanning, as well as mine face mapping and ore sorting. My background in mining and geology along with my passion for physics, machine learning and technological innovation have given me a deep understanding of the possibilities and limitations of using sensors for a wide variety of ore and mineral deposits.
I have founded RockDataWorks because I believe that real-time material sensing can be used to significantly improve the resource efficiency and sustainability of any mining operation in the world. Through RockDataWorks I want to support development and integration of ore sensing applications into mining and contribute to a more responsible utilization of mineral resources.
